The New Zealand Paeony Society was founded in 1989, and became an Incorporated Society in 1993.
It was formed to foster knowledge of paeonies, to participate in their growth, production, uses, and to be a catalyst and initiator for orderly growth and development of a commercial paeony export industry.
The New Zealand Paeony Society consists of a President, Secretary/Treasurer and Executive members, representing each region. The Society normally meets six to seven times a year.
The Society also has a Root Producers section. This group holds separate meetings, open to all registered Root Producers. A number of the Paeony Society members grow considerable quantities for sale as their primary business or in conjunction with flower production.
The Society maintains close contact with the New Zealand Flower Exporters’ Association and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, and is a supporter of a unified flower grower organisation.
The Society has carried out many research programmes, including cultivation and planting, nutrition and many aspects of cut flower production for the benefit of their numbers.
